After months of teasing and a petition for Danny DeVito to voice the character, the role of Detective Pikachu in the self-titled movie goes to Ryan Reynolds.

The trailer for the film was released back in January and with Pikachu being the star (as well as the only CGI element of the movie) the voice of the character will determine the film’s success.

Pikachu was always slated to be played by a big name star with possible choices being Hugh Jackman, Mark Wahlberg and even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but when Danny DeVito’s name was thrown in the Internet took the ball and ran with it. Despite being known for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia DeVito has done some voice-over work for children (The Lorax). Also, Detective Pikachu is going to have a somewhat darker tone than most other Pokemon films, with Pikachu helping to find the potentially kidnapped father of his friend and/or sidekick.

Despite the Internet having a bad reaction to the casting, Reynolds is known for his love of childish concepts. His hilarious take on Deadpool can also be applied to Pikachu. Consider the fact that Pikachu has been unable to truly communicate with audiences for the past 20 years. Just imagine the kind of colorful, off-the-wall things that he(?) may need to get off of his chest.

If you can’t imagine it then just watch this trailer featuring it:
