“AKIRA” CREATOR DEBUTS A NEW FILM
OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR ORBITAL ERA BY AKIRA CREATOR KATSUHIRO OTOMO
Sometimes it’s hard to live up to past successes, and Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo still has to meet the bar he set with his 1988 film. Despite releasing Steamboy in 2004, Akira is still the film that brings people into the world of anime. Over the weekend at Anime Expo, we finally learned what Otomo has been up to these past few years.
Otomo has teamed up with Sunrise to produce his third film called Orbital Era and the teaser trailer was revealed. The official press release dropped as well:
“The new movie ‘Orbital Era’ will be his 3rd animated feature film after ‘Akira’ (1988) and ‘Steamboy’ (2004). Otomo himself will write the original concept and screenplay, as well as design and direct the film. The plot takes place in the near-future on a space colony under construction. It is an action-adventure story following the lives of some young boys surviving in this peculiar environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. ‘The reality found in mankind’s future’ will be depicted through their perspective.”
There’s no official release date scheduled but Otomo is a solid filmmaker; and that’s not just from Akira. Plus, Sunrise being the anime leader thanks to Gundam, wouldn’t work on something if they didn’t see the potential in it.
