ALPHA VS. OMEGA
CHRIS JERICHO RETURNS TO JAPAN TO FACE KENNY OMEGA
This past weekend Kenny Omega successfully defended his IWGP United States Championship against Trent Baretta at the NJPW Power Struggle event. Omega had clearly broken a sweat as Baretta looked to pull off the upset in his debut as a heavyweight wrestler, but the winner and still IWGP US champion was Omega.
Omega is the first IWGP United States Champion, winning the title this past summer.
In a signature promo after the match, Omega clearly asked for his next challenger to step up. What would follow was the greatest shock wrestling fans could ever ask for. A video package started to play with a countdown clock (sound familiar?) and when the countdown ended none other than Y2J Chris Jericho was on the jumbo-tron with an excellent promo and challenge for Omega.
Jericho is no stranger to the United States Championship as he has won the WWE’s version of the belt.
Without ruining the atmosphere of the promo, Jericho basically challenged Omega for his IWGP US Championship at NJPW’s largest event this coming January: Wrestle Kingdom. Apparently the talks for this match started this past summer when Jericho was let off of his contract with WWE. Jericho also pitched the idea as a possible way of getting back at WWE for denying Jericho a favor. Next October Jericho will be running his latest project: Rock and Wrestling Rager, a cruise that will feature live rock performances and live wrestling as well. Jericho had asked WWE if he could use some NXT talents to work the cruise but was denied. Shortly after the denial was when Jericho started his talks with NJPW.
Right now this is a one-time encounter and Omega also hyped the match while speaking some truth about the state of wrestling today:
There’s no word on whether Jericho will work for NJPW again or if he will even wrestle after Wrestle Kingdom 12. Wrestle Kingdom 12 will take place January 4th in the Tokyo Dome. Check out the promo below:
