CHANNING TATUM PULLS A RYAN REYNOLDS
THE “GAMBIT” STAR TO DIRECT HIS OWN FILM
Some little known film news flying under the radar have been the updates on Channing Tatum’s Gambit film. In case you missed it (I admit I have), the solo film for the southern X-Men member was slated to release on June 7th of this year. The project however, has been pushed back several times due to directors dropping out. Adding to that is the Disney-Fox merger, which would transfer development from Fox to Disney and could scrap the whole idea in the process.
With the success of the Deadpool franchise and a potential rating change that may occur due to the merger, Channing Tatum may just pull a Ryan Reynolds. Directors that have been tied to and then released from the Gambit film include Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), and Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island). Tatum has been signed to star as Gambit for the past three years! With Tatum becoming committed to the project in a similar manner to Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool word is that Tatum will direct the film himself.
Directing and starring in the film is the only way to keep the project alive at this point, but development is still underway. It is possible to have the film released this year, but at this point it would be hell for all parties involved. Granted Reynolds has proven that solo hero films can be produced separately from the corporate studios.
Tatum is more dedicated to the project than anyone else, so Gambit could be a film that gets through the Disney-Fox merger filter. If Tatum does end up directing, it would also be his first time ever. That might not be a risk that any major studio would want to take.
