Japan always gets the best stuff, video game news included. Over the weekend at the D23 Expo in Japan, Disney revealed more footage of the third installment of the Kingdom Hearts franchise.

The previous trailer showed off gameplay in the Toy Story universe with players able to team up with Buzz Lightyear and Woody. Sora, Donald and Goofy were also transformed into toys as well. This new video focuses on the world of Monsters, Inc. with the gang becoming monsters and meeting Sulley, Mike and Boo. The Tangled world makes a small appearance as well.

The trailer also reveals that Sora has lost his memory of Marluxia, or that he is now Ventus (an entirely different person altogether). With Venus in the game, Vanitas makes an appearance as well (although we cannot see his face). Other than those story details, the trailer is mostly gameplay, which is amazing but not the major focus of the franchise at this point.

Along with the D23 trailer, the trailer for the theme song “Don’t Think Twice” by Hikaru Utada, dropped as well. This trailer only features flashes of gameplay, but does end with a major plot point: Riku abandoning his keyblade.

The gameplay trailers are nice and do generate buzz for a sequel that has been long overdue. Fans of the story though, can tell you that the Kingdom Hearts franchise is notorious for having a convoluted story with amnesia, transformations and mistaken identity running rampant over various remakes across numerous game systems (including a mobile phone game). Fans want to see trailers that reveal some much needed plot information, especially if we have to wait for another entry in the franchise.

The game is still slated to be released this year and will also feature San Fransokyo from the Big Hero 6 world. It was already revealed that Kingdom Hearts 3 would have less worlds than the previous two games, but Big Hero 6, Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. are all new worlds that have yet to be featured in the franchise, so fans should be willing to let the number of worlds slide.
