MICHAEL JACKSON LIVES ON AS “CAPTAIN EO”
WATCH THE ROUGH CUT OF CAPTAIN EO ONLINE
Despite being the King of Pop, Michael Jackson never really crossed into the film and TV industry. The only known recordings he’s been in were as the Scarecrow in The Wiz and a special film experience for Disney World, Captain EO.
Captain EO was a sci-fi musical that starred Michael Jackson and took the audience on a deep space journey to find the Supreme Leader and eventually cure her of her wretchedness. It was prominently featured in Disney Land and Disney World from 1986 to 1997, until it returned shortly after Jackson’s death. After that, it’s last showing was December 6, 2015.
While the full film cannot be obtained now, the rough cut was uploaded by YouTuber Kevin Day. It’s only 17 minutes and it really is roughly cut, but if you haven’t seen it you can still get the idea of the film’s plot. You may even be able to find the full film if you dig deep enough. Funnily enough, the rough cut is only a few months shy of the film’s actual premiere date, as it was released in 1986. The film also debuted two unreleased songs at the time, “Another Part of Me” (later released in the Bad album) and “We Are Here to Change the World” which was only released as a shorter version the 2004 album Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection.
Captain EO was written by George Lucas and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The Supreme Leader is played by Angelica Houston and Michael Jackson was at his prime during the filming. It really is one of the best ways to view him so many years after his death.
