TEST YOUR MIGHT
“MORTAL KOMBAT 11” WILL KILL YOU
MORTAL KOMBAT 11 was announced back at the 2018 Video Game Awards but no actual information was available…until today. With creative director and Mortal Kombat mastermind Ed Boon on stage during a live streamed reveal event, the upcoming game’s story, characters and gameplay mechanics were revealed; along with a few other surprises.
Firstly, the character of Sonya Blade was revealed to be played by WWE Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, with her making a live appearance at the event.
Next, new meter bars were introduced. There’s a defense meter that allows a perfect block to be initiated. Players will be able to use the perfect block to escape deadly combos and launch a counter-attack. Conversely, there’s an attack meter that allows for what used to be called “X-Ray” moves. The meter can be used to extend combos or deal extra damage to normal attacks. The bar also allows for stunning cinematic moves. Another gameplay mechanic added is the “Fatal Blow”, only available when a player is down to 30% of their health. The “Fatal Blow” is the new version of the “X-Ray” attack but is actually reusable rather than relegated to a one-time move.
Lastly, the story (or at least the prologue) of the game was revealed along with the synopsis:
“Raiden has upset the balance of history with the death of Shinnok. Tired of Earthrealm’s defiance, Kronika, The Keeper of Time will bring order to the universe through any means necessary.”
In case you didn’t notice, characters like Baraka and Skarlet return and a new character, Geras, will make an appearance (along with other new characters). All characters are also completely customizable with the character appearances having certain effects on their moves.
It also wouldn’t be a Mortal Kombat game without the brutal Fatalities:
Mortal Kombat 11 will have a beta phase on March 28th with the game dropping on April 23, 2019. Plus anyone who pre-orders or enters the beta will get Shao Khan.
