THE “CLOVERFIELD” UNIVERSE EXPANDS (AGAIN)
NEW WEBSITE WITH CONNECTION TO THIRD CLOVERFIELD MOVIE APPEARS
If this headline surprised you then welcome to the club (or doomsday bunker). Earlier today the website Tagruato went online, with only a homepage that displays a strange message. This new site is part of a strange marketing campaign for the next installment of the now existing Cloverfield universe.
The new website (through some decoding on Reddit) was found to contain this message:
“Tokyo – January 18 2018: Tagruato has begun development on a revolutionary new energy technology in what CEO Garo Yoshida called a technological great leap forward for our planet. This renewable technology will take at least 4 years to complete along with another 6 years International regulatory bodies to bring the powerful revolutionary energy source by April 18 2028”
Somehow people on Reddit were able to find a message in this.
Those who skipped the 2016 film 10 Cloverfield Lane, missed the connection it had with the 2008 film Cloverfield (spoilers). John Goodman’s character prepared a doomsday shelter in case the Cloverfield monster attacked Louisiana (after the monster already decimated New York in the 2008 film). The time between the two films release does not impact the apparent timeline of the Cloverfield universe.
The Cloverfield franchise gains a new entry with the film formerly called God Particle. The new film will now be called something else entirely but will still fit into the universe, despite being set in a space station. On a basic level the three films can be connected, the Cloverfield monster attacks New York, which prompts John Goodman to hide in his bunker because monsters (and/or aliens) are attacking and the third film could be a prequel, happening at the same time as the destruction of New York, or a result of the attack.
The monster nicknamed “Clover” by movie fans may return-or bring some friends.
As a prequel, the researchers/astronauts could have encountered the monster/alien threat before Earth is attacked. If the film is in real time, they could be watching from above as their homes are destroyed while dealing with a similar threat on their stations. Lastly, the space station in the film could be used as a form of recon on the monster/alien threat, or as a form of retaliation (firing a missile from the station).
The connection between all three films lies deeper than this speculation as the marketing for J.J. Abrams’ 2008 film laid all the groundwork for more crazy connections. Apparently marketing for the 2008 film led to fake MySpace profiles of the film’s characters and a website with photos of the Cloverfield monster attack. Along with the profiles came a fake website that documented the blog of a long distance relationship where a guy supposedly discovered the Cloverfield monster(click on the picture and enter the password “jllovesth”).
Adding more depth to the story was a website featured on John Goodman’s shirt in the 10 Cloverfield Lane film that sparked an entire new level of meta to the film’s universe. There are also manga volumes dedicated to the Cloverfield monster and its conspiracy but luckily there’s a wiki for everything. And if it’s still too much to wrap your head around then check out this video explaining the entire franchise universe.
Based on the decoded message, the film may drop April 18th.
