THE OG CANDYMAN WILL RETURN
TONY TODD TO RETURN TO CANDYMAN REBOOT/SEQUEL IN SOME FASHION
Jordan Peele’s Candyman has already been listed as a reboot/sequel with a new actor playing the iconic slasher; but that doesn’t mean the original villain can’t return to the franchise. Over the weekend at Nickel City Con, the original Candyman Tony Todd revealed he had been tapped by Peele to return to the franchise:
“Out of the blue, I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.”
The actual character of Candyman has already been cast and Lakeith Stanfield is in talks to star as Anthony, so Todd’s actual role is still a mystery. Given Peele’s track record though, Todd’s appearance won’t be squandered. Stanfield’s character of Anthony was also recently fleshed out as “a socially pronounced artist in Chicago who researches the urban legend of Candyman” and after investigating the last whereabouts of the killer, strange killings start occurring around him. This film acts as a sequel as viewers will be taken to a gentrified development on the former Cabrini-Green housing projects the first film took place in.
Production is currently underway as the film looks to release on June 12th, 2020.
