“ULTIMATE” UPDATES ON SUPER SMASH BROS.

NINTENDO REVEALS FIVE NEW CHARACTERS & BONUSES

In a follow-up to E3, Nintendo did their traditional Nintendo Direct streams to give fans an update on current projects. While most of us didn’t really expect much, boy were we blown over.

When Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was announced, it seemed that nothing could make the game better. Every character in the franchise’s history was revealed to be playable, along with Nintendo introducing newer echo fighters, a new debut with Ridley and massive overhauls to gameplay. They had even announced the release of special Gamecube controllers to play the game on the Switch.

During today’s Nintendo Direct, five new characters were revealed along with new assist trophies and the exact number of stages available.

In another crossover event, the protagonists of the Castlevania series Simon and Richter Belmont were revealed to make their Smash debut. Richter is technically an echo of Simon, but only in play style. Both of their move sets are different due to them starring in different games. They both come with the Dracula’s castle stage, which will feature every Castlevania boss as a stage hazard along with the appearance of Dracula himself.

The third and fourth characters to debut are Chrom from Fire Emblem: Awakening and Dark Samus from the Metroid franchise. Despite being an echo fighter, Chrom is more of a combination of Ike and Lucina, rather than being a complete copy of another character. Dark Samus is actually lighter than Samus with more emphasis on mobility.

The last character announced is also another debut: King K. Rool from the Donkey Kong franchise. The best part is that towards the end of the video, Masahiro Sakurai announced that more characters would be coming!

The next part of the announcements came in the form of stages and assist trophies. A whopping 103 stages are available in the game, with a weird feature that transports players between two stages mid-fight called “Stage Morph”. All stages are also available in classic N64 style graphics (if the stage appeared in that version).

Special characters can appear in the game as assist trophies with Knuckles (Sonic the Hedgehog), Alucard (Castlevania), Krystal (Star Fox), Zero (Megaman), Gray Fox (Metal Gear Solid) and the falling Moon (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time) joining Bomberman and Waluigi. In yet another crossover event, Rathalos from the Monster Hunter franchise will appear as a boss and as an assist trophy.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will release on December 7th. You can view the entire Nintendo Direct announcement below:
