WILL YOU BE “AFRAID OF THE DARK?”
CLASSIC NICKELODEON TV SHOW GETS MOVIE RELEASE DATE
90’s babies rejoice! The classic horror anthology Are You Afraid of the Dark? is getting a feature film. On top of that the film is slated for a Halloween timed release.
When the film was announced, writer Gary Dauberman was hired to write the project. The film will be produced by Matt Kaplan. Dauberman not only wrote this year’s hit It but will return to write It: Chapter 2 and has writing credits for the Anabelle and The Conjuring series of films.
For a quick refresher, Are You Afraid of the Dark? featured a group of teens called the Midnight Society who told scary stories around a campfire in the woods. It was a tribute to The Twilight Zone meant for children at the time and it had some really scary, yet age appropriate writing. The show was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel and ran originally from 1992-1996 before getting a one season reboot in 1999.
The show acted as an anthology due to its nature of being episodic, despite the stories acting as stand-alone features (occasionally stories/characters would intersect or feature sequels on future episodes). While a film could do the same thing, anthology films tend to work best when the entire film is dedicated to one story. There’s no word on how the adaptation will be styled. With the show being a Nickelodeon original, Paramount pictures will naturally be in charge of the project.
The film will be “Submitted for your approval”: October 11, 2019.
